BIPV Lahaina Civic Center

Last November, a new Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) system, designed and constructed by MECO and supported by funding from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), was dedicated to the County of Maui at the Lahaina Civic Center. BIPV systems serve two purposes: they generate clean energy from the sun and, at the same time, serve as a building component such as a roof or wall. These combined functions can help to reduce construction costs and encourage greater use of photovoltaic technology.

The new solar modules installed at the Lahaina Civic Center provide both an extension to a covered walkway and a source of power for a programmable event board and parking lot lighting. "We're very pleased to work with MECO to incorporate clean, renewable power into our facility," says Jeff Anderson, Maui County's West District Supervisor. The solar-powered event board was programmed to announce upcoming games and post scores at the recent Maui Invitational Basketball Tournament.
