Net Energy Metering (or NEM) is designed to encourage greater use of solar (photovoltaic), wind, biomass, or hydroelectric power for electrical generation by residential and commercial customers.
NEM allows you to offset all or part of your electricity purchases from the utility by energy produced by your eligible renewable generation system and export any excess electricity to the utility grid at the retail rate.
The Hawaiian Electric companies' Feed-in Tariff (or FIT) program is designed to encourage the addition of more renewable energy projects in Hawaii. Pre-established rates and standardized contract terms provide an easy way for individuals, small businesses, government entities, or others to sell renewable energy to their utility. The Hawaii Public Utilities Commission is still reviewing the proposal for Tier 3 of the FIT for projects up to five megawatts. Management of the FIT application and queuing process is by Accion Group, Inc., which also serves as the Independent Third Party Observer to oversee the program on behalf of the Public Utilities Commission.
