HELCO 2001 Institutional Winner

County of Hawaii
Traffic Division

Red lights usually indicate "stop", but in this case they indicated "go" for Hawaii County's Traffic Division.  The County converted the red signal lamps in the traffic signals from 100 Watt incandescent lamps to 22 Watt LED's.  Besides realizing an 83% reduction in electrical usage, the County will also save an extra $5,700 per year in maintenance costs due to the LED's 100,000 hour lamp life.  Plans are under way to replace the green and amber lights as well.

Annual Energy Savings:  $53,000
Annual kWh Reduction:  83%
Payback Period:  2.0 years
HELCO Rebate:  $12,000
