Would you be willing to make a donation to support renewable energy projects in Hawaii? Would you like to help Hawaii's youth learn more about renewable energy for our state? That's what Hawaiian Electric's Sun Power for Schools program is all about.
Hawaiian Electric Company, Hawaii Electric Light Company, and Maui Electric Company provide monetary and in-kind support to demonstrate renewable energy at several public schools on Oahu, the Big Island, and in Maui County. This support, along with voluntary donations from the community; fund the installation, operation, and maintenance of renewable energy systems for two years. After that period, the systems are operated and maintained by the State of Hawaii Department of Education. In addition to demonstrating renewable energy systems, the Sun Power for Schools program promotes renewable energy education in the classroom.
As of January 2013, 40 public schools in Hawaii have received a Sun Power for Schools system. With your help, more schools can benefit!
How are the schools chosen?
The Hawaii Department of Education chooses schools based on a commitment to include renewable energy education in the classroom. School buildings must also meet structural and environmental requirements for the system and be in locations that can benefit the most from available renewable energy, such as solar and wind resources.
Why are we asking for support?
We are asking for your support in order to continue the program, thereby diversifying and increasing the number of renewable energy systems installed at public schools and expanding opportunities for renewable energy education. For the benefit of Hawaii’s students and interested individuals, these systems serve as working models that demonstrate renewable energy production and illustrate the associated environmental benefits of using renewable resources for the production of electricity.
